In through her bedroom window, Ellyn heard the sound of crickets.<\/p>\n

She pushed back the sheets and peered into the warm summer night.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre the crickets singing, Mama?\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d said her mother.\u00a0 \u201cThe crickets are singing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAre the crickets happy, Mama?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d said her mother.\u00a0 \u201cThe crickets are happy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAre the crickets in the grass, Mama?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d said her mother. \u201cThe crickets are in the grass.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAre they in the dirt?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, probably,\u201d said her mother. \u201cSome of the crickets are in the dirt.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAre they in the mud?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe, \u201c said her mother. \u201cMaybe some of them are in the mud.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy are they in the grass and in the dirt and in the mud, Mama?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause they live outside. The crickets live in the grass and on the ground.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI can hear them.\u201d Ellyn put her hand to her ear.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy do they sing?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey sing for each other,\u201d said her mother. \u201cThey sing songs about the day. They sing songs about the night.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHow do crickets sing, Mama?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey sing with their legs,\u201d said her mother. \u201cThey rub them together and they make their music.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ellyn smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cWill you sing me a song, Mama? Can you sing me a song about the day?\u201d<\/p>\n

Ellyn\u2019s head fell slowly to her pillow. Her mother laid the sheets back over her arms.<\/p>\n
